The last of four Stockton teen-agers tried for double murder following a foiled robbery outside a west Modesto market in 1994 was acquitted Tuesday. Sambuon Mao, 19, was the sole defendant cleared.

Jury Deadlock Brings Mistrial

A Stanislaus County judge declared a mistrial Friday after a Superior Court jury said it was deadlocked in the double-murder trial of Francisco Vargas. The six-man, six-woman jury told Judge Jack Jacobson that it was deadlocked 7-5 for acquittal on the charges against Vargas.

No one will pay for the murder of 18-year-old Cesar Villa, who was shot in the back while he rode a bicycle near Mark Twain Junior High School in west Modesto. Thursday, a jury acquitted Alejandro Alvarez, 25, of murder after a two-week trial in Stanislaus County Superior Court.
